Health Insurance Information
As an Erasmus+ student at Hasan Kalyoncu University, having valid health insurance is mandatory for your enrollment and is a legal requirement for your Student Residence Permit application in Türkiye.
There are three main ways to fulfill this requirement:
1. Private Health Insurance (Purchased in Türkiye)
This is the most common and recommended option for Erasmus students.
-
Why: Policies purchased from Turkish companies are guaranteed to be compliant with the immigration office’s (Göç İdaresi) standards.
-
How: You can purchase this online or upon arrival in Gaziantep. It typically costs between ₺400 – ₺1,200 per year.
-
Requirements: The policy must explicitly state that it covers the minimum requirements for a residence permit (Inpatient: Min ₺150,000 / Outpatient: Min ₺15,000).
2. Bilateral Social Security Agreements
Türkiye has social security agreements with several countries. If you are from one of these countries, you may be exempt from buying private insurance:
-
Countries include: Germany (T/A 11), The Netherlands (N/TUR 106), Belgium (BT.8), Austria (A/TR 3), France (SE 208-06 AFT), and others.
-
Action Required: You must bring the specific “Formulary” from your home country’s social security office. This form must be approved by the Social Security Institution (SGK) in Gaziantep to be valid for your residence permit.
3. General Health Insurance (GSS) – Public Insurance
International students have the right to register for the Turkish government’s public health insurance (GSS) within the first 3 months of their official university registration.
-
Pros: It provides full coverage at all state and university hospitals.
-
Cons: It involves a monthly premium payment and can take some time to activate.
Critical Reminders
-
No Travel Insurance: Standard travel insurance or “World-wide” policies purchased outside of Türkiye are NOT accepted for the residence permit unless they are officially notarized and translated into Turkish, and they must meet very specific coverage criteria. We strongly suggest purchasing a local Turkish policy to avoid rejection.
-
Validity: Your insurance must cover the entire duration of your stay. If your mobility is for 5 months, your insurance should cover at least 5 months (we recommend 6 months for safety).
-
Non-EU Students: Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Türkiye, as Türkiye is not an EU member state. You must follow one of the options listed above.
